HLTAID012 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting

As an ACECQA (Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority) approved course, Childcare First Aid is specifically designed for the childcare and education sectors. This Childcare First Aid course goes beyond the bounds of the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course give specific examples and demonstrations of how an emergency first aid response should be provided within an education and childcare setting.

Approved by ACECQA, HLTAID012 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting has been certified validated as sufficient training in asthma and anaphylaxis, First Aid, First Aid Kits, as well as in-depth training on managing asthma and anaphylaxis, how to use an epipen, and how to follow the DRSABCD protocol on Adults, Children and Infants.

Four key modules covered by the course are detailed below:

• HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support
• HLTAID011 – Provide first aid
• HLTAID012 – Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting

On successful completion of the course, participants receive a nationally accredited and recognised certification in basic emergency life support, CPR, first aid, and childcare first aid.

No Online Workbook or E-learning Required

For an effective, efficient, and convenient learning experience, National Training College has created streamlined learning materials to minimise the stress of online learning. Hence, self-directed, and self-paced mandatory pre-course reading, and quiz requirements have been put in place for the ease of participants to complete prior to the practical session and bring it to the training session. While designed to be helpful and easy to understand, the actual study hours required for the pre-course reading and initial quiz will vary from person to person. Most importantly, it depends on the existing knowledge, skills, and experience of the participants.

First Aid Course Delivery

7 Hour Face- to-Face Training & Assessment

Childcare First Aid is offered through practical and face to face training in the classroom. It covers all practical training and required knowledge.

All the participants are assessed through combinations of these assessment methods:

• Practical Demonstrations: Simulated scenarios/Roleplaying
• Project (Incident Report)
• Knowledge Assessment

Child Care First Aid Course Requirements

• Course participants should be 14 years of age. Participants under 18 years of age need to present the enrolment form from a parent or guardian that accepts responsibility
• Prepare a verbal incident report or provide the information that enables the preparation of incident reports (e.g. the first aid report)
• Communicate in an effective and assertive manner in an incident (e.g. Communicate DRSABCD and give the casualty handover)
• Use your literacy and numeracy skills required for reading, interpreting and applying all the guidelines and protocols (e.g. read and follow ARC guidelines)- The Australian Resuscitation Council
• Perform uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compression and breaths) for at least 2 minutes on adult manikin placed on floor
• Perform uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compression and breaths) at least 2 minutes on child manikin placed on floor
• Perform interrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compression) at least 2 minutes on infant manikin placed on firm surface

The First Aid Course Certificate

On the Day after Successful Completion of the First Aid Training Course:

Our team at National Training College pride ourselves on offering excellent customer service for our clients. For complete facilitation and ease, we work hard and go to great lengths to make sure that all candidates who successfully complete the HLTAID012 – Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting course, HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid , HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support (BELS) course, and HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (T&C), receive the fully nationally accredited certificates on the same day of completing their first aid training, or within 24 hours.

The certificates are electronically issued and will be sent to the email address used for course registration. An additional fee of $12.00 will be charged for paper copies of the certificate (this includes the postage charges).

It is important to note that in order for the certification to be issued, you must supply the USI number and completed enrolment form, failure to do so within the allotted time can result in a delay in issuing the course completion certificate. (T&C)

Performance Evidence

The learner will practice and demonstrate the ability to complete tasks in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines, workplace procedures, including safework australia recommendations.

Follow DRSABCD in line with ARC guidelines, including:

• performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
• Performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on a child resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
• performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface
• responded appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
• managed the unconscious breathing casualty
• followed single rescue procedure, including the demonstration of a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
• followed the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Defibrillation

• Responded to at least three simulated first aid scenarios contextualised to the candidate’s workplace/community setting, and involving infants and children of varying ages including:
• conducted a visual and verbal assessment of the casualty
• demonstrated safe manual handling techniques
• post-incident debrief and evaluation
• provided an accurate verbal and written report of the incident
• conducted a hazard assessment and identified strategies to minimise risk

Applied first aid procedures for the following:

• allergic reaction
• anaphylaxis including using an epipen
• bleeding control
• choking and airway obstruction
• envenomation, using pressure immobilization- snake bite management
• fractures, sprains and strains, using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation principles techniques
• head injuries
• poisoning
• respiratory distress, including asthma
• seizures & convulsions, including febrile convulsions and epilepsy
• shock
• Located and interpreted workplace policies and procedures

Knowledge Evidence

The learner must demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

State/Territory regulations, first aid codes of practice and workplace procedures including:

• ARC Guidelines for provision of CPR and first aid to infants, children and adults
• guidelines from Australian national peak clinical bodies
• safe work practices to minimise risks and potential hazards
• first aid requirements for services under the Education and Care Services National Law
• infection control principles and procedures, including use of standard precautions
• requirements for currency of skill and knowledge

Legal, workplace and community considerations, including:

• awareness of potential need for stress-management techniques and available support following an emergency situation, including the psychological impact on children
• duty of care requirements
• respectful behaviour towards a casualty
• own skills and limitations
• consent, including situations in which parental/caregiver consent is required
• privacy and confidentiality requirements
• importance of debriefing

Considerations when providing first aid including:

• airway obstruction due to body position
• appropriate duration and cessation of CPR
• appropriate use of an AED, including placement of pads for adults and children aged older than 8 years
• specific considerations when using an AED on children aged between 1 and 8 years, including identification of AED with paediatric capability, paediatric voltage and use of paediatric pads
• chain of survival
• standard precautions
• how to conduct a visual and verbal assessment of the casualty

Principles and procedures for application of first aid management of the following scenarios:

• abdominal injuries
• allergic reaction
• anaphylaxis, including signs, symptoms and triggers and using different types of adrenaline auto injectors
• asthma, including signs, symptoms and triggers and using different types of bronchodilators
• basic care of a wound
• bleeding control
• burns
• cardiac conditions, including chest pain
• choking and airway obstruction
• crush injuries
• diabetes
• dislocations
• drowning
• envenomation
• environmental impact, including hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and heat stroke
• eye and ear injuries
• febrile convulsions
• fractures
• head, neck and spinal injuries
